CONSIDERING EYELID SURGERY (BLEPHAROPLASTY)?
You may feel that the eyes looking back at you in the mirror every morning look tired or maybe people question whether you had a good night’s sleep because your eyes are swollen with bags and you have dark circles under your eyes. A primary reason for droopy eyes is simply due to age. As your facial skin loses its elasticity and begins to sag, your eyebrows also begin to droop. As the outer parts of the eyebrows droop, the skin of the upper eyelids will look saggy, as if you had developed an extra skin fold that was not there several years before. The sagging eyelid skin may also impede your vision. In those cases whereby the upper eyelid drooping is significant enough; medical insurance may cover the upper eyelid blepharoplasty.

Another reason for “tired eyes” is because of droopy or migrating eyelid fat. This fat is held back by a thin wall of fibrous tissue called the orbital septum, which sags over time. The fat, held firmly back by this wall in youth can bulge with age, giving you baggy upper and lower eyelids.
If your eyes are showing the signs of aging, droopy eyelids, under eye bags or swelling, dark circles and crow’s feet (wrinkles), eyelid surgery can help. A blepharoplasty trims this extra fat and tightens the wall, restoring a youthful contour. Dr. Emilio Justo can help give you dramatically younger eyes through an expertly performed eyelid lift.
Patients often elect to combine facial enhancement procedures, such as endoscopic forehead and brow lift, facelift and neck lift. Dr. Justo may recommend a forehead lift to improve the height and maintain the contour of the upper eyebrow. Your facial enhancement options will be discussed with you during your personal consultation with Dr. Justo.

EYELID SURGERY (BLEPHAROPLASTY) AND RECOVERY
There are different surgical methods to correct eyelid drooping. Dr. Justo will examine the extent of your eyelid drooping and your aesthetic goals to refresh your facial appearance. Based upon this examination and in consultation with you, Dr. Justo will recommend the best procedure(s) and surgical methods to accomplish your desired goals.
Typically, Dr. Justo performs a blepharoplasty in about one and a half hours for all four eyelids (both upper and both lower eyelids). Dr. Justo performs eyelid surgery in his accredited outpatient surgical center.* Blepharoplasty of the upper eyelids alone takes less than 30 minutes and is most often performed under local anesthesia only.
Recovery from eyelid surgery is complete within seven to ten days. A small amount of lumpiness is usual at the corners of the eyes. Minimal blurry vision quickly resolves. Sunglasses allow you to go out in public immediately after surgery, and make-up can be worn within about one week. Normal activity can be resumed the next day, and exercise can be resumed within 7 to 10 days after surgery.
MUSCLE TIGHTENING BLEPHAROPLASTY
One type of eyelid lift procedure is generically referred to as “muscle tightening” of the upper eyelids. This procedure is done for those eyelids whereby the upper eyelid margin has moved down close to, or even in some cases blocks the person’s pupil, thereby causing a restriction in peripheral vision as well as heavy, tired eyes, eye fatigue, and arched furrowed forehead.
This type of muscle weakness occurs gradually over years and is due to age-related weakness of either the Levator or Mueller’s muscle of the upper eyelid. In less common cases, this may occur more rapidly as a result of either surgical trauma, blunt injury, or due to a neurological condition such as ocular myasthenia gravis.
Muscle-tightening surgery to physically elevate the upper eyelid above the pupil is done based on the weakness of the specific eye muscles. When done alone, muscle-tightening eyelid surgical lift is done under local anesthesia. Sometimes muscle tightening is done only for one upper eyelid, but most often it is done on both upper eyelids.
TRANSONJUNCTIVAL LOWER LID BLEPHAROPLASTY
This surgical procedure is done by making an incision behind the eyelid. The incision is then used to access the excess fat and to remove the redundant skin. Dr. Justo advises that this procedure is best suited for younger patients or those with a small amount of loose skin on the lower eyelid.
TRANSCUTANEOUS LOWER LID BLEPHAROPLASTY
For older patients who have quite a bit of loose and sagging eyelid skin, a transcutaneous lower lid procedure is recommended. The incision is made below the eyelashes on the lower eyelid.
